With all the books on implants available today, it is encouraging to see one that is well documented and elaborated. It is a great honor for me to write this prologue for the clinical and laboratory manual of overdenting with Dr. Shafie's implants. With more than 20 million Americans who are total tubers, there is no better time for this book to be written and used. University student's programs throughout the country, are finally realizing that overdenting with two implants, is to a large extent, the recommended choice treatment compared to leaving some total edenulies.

The amount of bone loss that in dentistry we have seen in total tenth patients during past generations, is considered terrifying. We think and we really taught that this atrophy of the alveolar bone was "normal" and continues after the extraction. What we now know is that two implants in the previous sector of the jaw will stop this progressive loss of the bone and preserve the flange instead of compressing it slowly, as time passes.
